Question

When I write off an invoice why is the write off date recorded as the original invoice date rather than the date of the write off.

I am trying to write off invoices to bad debts using the write off invoice function in accountant tools.  QBO records the amount of the write off as a discount to the date of the original invoice.  I want the date of write off to be the date of my choosing, i.e. year end, similar to the way it is done in QB desktop

Hello GJ4,

Welcome to Community!  When invoices remain unpaid, writing them off as bad debt, will ensure your accounts are aligned with the net income.  QuickBooks Online provides two ways, to write off bad debt.  I will be glad to provide both, so you can accomplish your QuickBooks goals seamlessly!

The accountant tools let you write off invoices, quickly and efficiently.  It enables you to set the Invoice Age, To date, and Balance less than filters, to your preference.  I suggest setting the To date, to the date you are writing off the invoice(s).  However, QuickBooks Online does have some differences with the features between QuickBooks Desktop.  You can also write off bad debt, by following the steps here.

If you would like to see additional options when writing off bad debt, please don't hesitate to submit a suggestion to our Development Team.  Recommendations are greatly appreciated in assisting with future updates and feature enhancements, to improve your overall customer experience in QuickBooks Online.

Feel free to reach back out with other questions.  We would be happy to help!
