Why does invoice show as paid when it has not been marked as paid?

Invoice was just created.  I went back to edit and now it says invoice has been paid.  invoice is not paid.

Thanks for reaching out about your invoices. Quickbooks Online is a great tool able to assist you in creating and sending invoices to your customers so you can get paid for your services. I can provide some information about why this invoice would be marked as paid.

 

If you already have a credit or payment outstanding for your client, and the Automatically apply credits feature turned on, that would automatically apply any credit remaining on the customer account to the invoice. To turn this feature off, go to the Gear Icon, then Account and settings. Select the Advanced tab, then in the Automation section, click on Automatically apply credits to turn it to off. Don't forget to save.
