Can't set Products & Services to taxable/untaxable

Last week, we were able to click "Edit" on items in the Products & Services list and select whether they were taxable/untaxable, as well as their category (For example, SAAS). Here is a screenshot, the empty space used to contain a "Sales Tax" box. Below it, is a screenshot of that box that I took last week. How can we set the sales tax for products and services?

It's important to have your sales tax settings for products and services functioning properly, fix-taxes. Let's work together to get this resolved.

 

We've received similar reports about the ability to make your products and services taxable and non-taxable in QuickBooks Online (QBO). To be added to the list of impacted users, I recommend contacting our QuickBooks support. 

 

Here's how:

 

  1. Hover on the Help button.
  2. On the Assistant tab, enter the question you want to ask about.
  3. Select the Search button, then click Contact Us if you want to speak with a representative in QuickBooks.

 

Furthermore, I've added an informative article for you to be guided in editing your sales tax rate in QBO.

 

Additionally, you can track your inventory in QBO so that you get alerts when it's time to restock.

I did talk to support - I found out that it is now tied to the option "I sell this product/service to my customers." If this is checked, the item is set to taxable, otherwise it is set to untaxable. This works, and makes sense. What doesn't make sense is that you took away the ability to set the TAX CLASSIFICATION - the tax classification is very important on services because, for example, SAAS is taxed differently in some places. I believe it is a bug that you have removed the ability to set the tax classification. This is what the box looked like:

We are currently investigating the issues with editing sales tax in the program. Rest assured that our engineering team is informed and working hard to fix the problem as soon as possible.

 

We recommend contacting our live support team for the latest updates on the issue. Also, they can add you to the list of affected users and keep you informed via email about the resolution progress. Here’s how:

 

  1. Log into your QuickBooks Online (QBO) account.
  2. Click the ? Help button at the top right corner.
  3. Go to the Search tab and enter your concern in the search field.
  4. Select Contact Us and choose a way to connect with us.

 

In the meantime, you can also do this to change the classification of your tax by editing it when creating an invoice. Here are the steps:

 

  1. Go to + New and select Invoice.
  2. Fill out the necessary details.
  3. Under Sales tax, click on See the math.
  4. Beside Products and services, select Edit.
  5. Click Edit sales tax.
  6. Choose the category and hit Done.
  7. Select Save and continue then Close.

It looks like this has been resolved. The Sales tax section is now visible.

With the intentional removal of the "Taxable" checkbox, support lead me to believe that removing this box was also a planned "feature". It would be nice to get confirmation as to whether or not this was a bug or a feature that is changing in the future? I would hope there are no actual plans to deprecate the Tax Classification because Automatic Sales Tax relies heavily on it.

I recognize the importance of accurately editing and classifying items, especially for ensuring the efficiency of Automatic Sales Tax. Your previous screenshot and updated information about the missing Edit sales tax option are noted and greatly appreciated. I'm jumping in on this thread to clarify this matter.

 

Upon checking on my end, there's no information surrounding this feature being planned to be removed from the Products and services page when creating or editing an item. As this feature is essential for tax compliance and accurate financial reporting, please know that the change you experienced wasn't intentional but rather an ongoing issue that our Product Engineers are actively working to resolve. I'm also glad to hear that the option is now available again on your end.

 

Since the investigation case for this problem is still being resolved, you can perform the workaround my colleague has provided above if you encounter the same issue again. Additionally, you can also try contacting our Live Support Team once more referencing investigation case number: INV-116050. This way you'll be added to the list of affected users in case you haven't been added yet and be informed of the progress of the investigation.

 

  1. Go to Help (?) in your QBO account.
  2. Choose the Search tab, and type in the INV reference number.
  3. Click on the Contact Us button.
  4. Pick Schedule appointment, Have us call you, or Chat with us.
