Question

Commerce Shopify sales tax

I am just getting started with the Commerce app for Shopify. I have data pulled in, but my setup isn't right.

The default sales tax in the setup didn't report any sales tax payables for the Texas State Comptroller.

I have edited it but now I get the error when trying to approve a payout. Why is there no QB support on the weekends at all?

We couldn't Add the transaction(s) due to "You have either selected a tax liability account on a transaction where it's not allowed, or haven't specified a tax rate along with it.". Try again later.

This error could be a browser-related issue, CrazyKZ777.

The outdated stored cache can affect the performance of QuickBooks Online. I'd recommend adding the transactions via a private window to resolve this. Before proceeding, make sure the setup of the account is correct.

    Here are the keyboard shortcuts:

    • Safari: Command + Shift + N
    • Google Chrome: CTRL + Shift + N
    • Mozilla Firefox or Microsoft Edge: CTRL + Shift + P

If it works, I'd suggest clearing the browser's cache to improve the program's performance. You can also use other supported browsers as alternatives.

In case the issue persists, I'd recommend contacting our QuickBooks Support Team. They can provide additional solutions to fix this. Our experts are available Monday to Friday between 6 AM to 6 PM PT and Saturday from 6 AM to 3 PM PT.

Additionally, I've added an article that'll help you learn more about the common tax setups and move the items from your system to QuickBooks Online:

Please keep us posted if you need additional assistance adding and managing your transactions. We're always here to help.

Thank you, but my problem is not a cache or performance issue. The initial setup isn't correct. Your link for setup goes to the OneSaas site, which is not supported for any US companies. They tell you that and Intuit will tell you that.

There is a new product called Commerce that syncs Shopify orders over. It did sync already, it's just set up correctly for the State Comptroller setup.

QB support is closed on the weekends. I was hoping to resolve this today.

    Hello, CrazyKZ777.

I appreciate your time in getting back to us about the tax liability account from the Commerce app sync. I'd like to clarify and add more details about the issue you're having.

We have a reported issue where users encountered the tax liability account error message after syncing the Commerce app with QuickBooks. Our engineers are currently investigating the problem and fix it as soon as possible.

We'll want to contact our support so you can be added to the list of affected users. This way, you'll receive updates and potential fixes regarding the tax liability error message.

Though as what my colleague pointed out, our support is only available on the weekdays. If you're using QuickBooks Online Advanced, it's dedicated support is available at any time and any day.

We can contact support as soon as they are available. We can follow the steps outlined in the article given by my colleague.

After fixing the messages and the orders come through smoothly, do you need to review your transactions in the near future? There are a variety of reports you can run to do this. I'll include this article in case you need help going through the basics: Run reports in QuickBooks Online

We appreciate your patience as we're working to fix this as soon as possible. While waiting for the availability of our support, do you have other questions about your data in QuickBooks Online? Let me know and I'll help you out in any way I can.

I was able to fix the error message by changing the tax item in the invoices. All sales are importing, it's just not creating a tax liability correctly as seen in QB for the State Comptroller so that I can file the taxes. I see it listed in the "Sales tax to pay" area of the Chart of Accounts.

The settings area of the Commerce section has "Sales tax to pay." It also automatically created an account called "Channel Sales Tax Payable." I think the Commerce app created those accounts. Neither of those calculate the tax to the Comptroller.

When I tried to change or add a new product/service and choose the Texas Comptroller, it says "You cannot use this account to create items as the account is used by system to track the tax."

Normally, what I have done for other accounts is mark each sale item as taxable or non-taxable and QB keeps track of the tax, but Commerce doesn't import it that way, but instead creates a separate line item for the tax charged.

So, I'm not sure how to get around this....or is this an Intuit bug too?

Did you find a fix for this issue? I think I’m dealing with the same issues in that my commerce channel from Shopify is not pulling the tax item info into my sales tax payable account so that it shows on my tax liability report. If I view the Sales Tax Liability Report, and look at the transaction report from there, I can see the sales but the tax amount says 0. If I click on the sales receipt, I can see the item creates called “Shopify Sales Tax Item” and the amount of tax charged on the sale. But why isn’t it showing on my tax liability report?!

I'm facing this same issue... been trying to figure it out for days until I found this thread that it appears to still be an issue.

I'm having the same issue.  I was on a chat with no resolution.  This seems to be an ongoing issue.  I may look at other online bookkeeping services.

Has this issue been resolved by Quickbooks? It is October 2024, and I am having this same issue. I made my payment to the State of Texas Comptroller, and when I try to record it like I would all bank transactions, I get the same error mentioned in this post.

If I go to the Sales Tax area of Quickbooks, it does not pull up the Shopify Sales Tax that is also owed (since that was recorded to a Shopify Sales Tax liability account). The Sales Tax section just shows the Quickbooks sales tax from my Quickbooks-related sales as owed to the Texas Comptroller. So, how am I supposed to clear the payable? This is frustrating.

We appreciate you for getting back to this thread, Dalma3.

It seems that you also posted the same concerns in the Community forum. My colleague already replied and shared some information regarding this matter.
