I appreciate you taking the time to inform us here in the Community space, @HPWStacey. I'll share details to help you fix the sales tax error inside QuickBooks Online (QBO).

Please know that the browser you use to access your company file accumulates temporary internet files that can affect how the program works. I recommend performing basic browser troubleshooting to ensure yours is free from temporary data and to restore it to its default function to prevent sales tax errors from happening.

To begin, you'll want to access your company file using an incognito or private browser through these shortcut keys:

    • Safari 11 or newer: +Shift+N
    • Chrome: Ctrl+Shift+N
    • Safari: Command+Shift+N

Once you're in, enter a transaction and see if sales tax is still present. If they don't show inside, proceed to clear your browser's cache. Refer to this article for the steps: Clear cache and cookies to fix issues when using QuickBooks Online.

You can also use other compatible browsers if the issue persists. Refer to this article to see the list of compatible browsers in QuickBooks Online: Other browsers.

It is important to note that the program calculates sales taxes, not only based on your customer's tax status and where you sell and ship the products. A service or product's tax category can also be the cause of why sales tax is present in your sales. For more information, check this article: Learn how QuickBooks Online calculates sales tax.

This is not quite correct.  I am running QB in New Private window and still have all sorts of issues.  Here is the error that is being displayed:

"" Our automatic Sales tax calculator is down, so we've used your business address to work out how much is due.  Please check this is correct before you send the invoice, or try again later""

So qb is calculating sales tax based on our location (we are remote sellers) rather than calculating the ship to address.  It is a mess.  Also other issue is, when we open an earlier invoice to edit, it recalculates the tax based on our address and changes the whole invoice amount.  This is happening for the past 10 days.  I called multiple times and the support does not know what they are talking and mentioned this in an email.  (The sales tax issue is currently an investigation that has been open. Its being working and will be resolved as quickly as possible. The investigation number is INV-113979)

Does anyone know how to see the status of the Investigation.

Dealing with incorrect sales tax calculations in QuickBooks as a remote seller can be frustrating, Krish, especially when it impacts your invoices and customer satisfaction. Let me provide you with the investigation status and offer alternative options to address the issue.

The investigation status is still In Progress. Our engineers are currently looking into it. While they are working on it, we don't have a timeline for when this gets fixed.

In the meantime, you can manually uncheck the tax box or set the tax rate to 0% as a workaround.

I'm sharing this article as a guide to help understand US sales and use tax rules: Learn about sales and use tax in the US.

In addition, you can run the Sales Tax Liability report to view your sales tax info anytime. This ensures everything is accurate before you file your return to your tax agency.

You can always get back to the Community space if there's anything else you need to know about managing sales taxes or other QuickBooks tasks, Krish. I'm here to help all the time.
