Question

How do I fix previous sales tax periods that are showing overdue. The sales tax page looks different now and it is showing the previous periods overdue.

I paid the previous tax periods on time and when I paid them they did show as paid in the old sales tax system. Now that the sales tax system looks different, they are showing overdue. Since the interface is different than it was, I don't know how to go back and see history and get those to show as paid.

What if I just ignore the first 2 quarters that I've already filed and paid for?
From this point forward it should fix itself, correct?

Hi there, @VBPB

Currently, there's an investigation about Sales Tax Returns showing that it is overdue despite being paid. I recommend contacting our live support to add your account to the affected users list. Just provide your name, updated email address, and the investigation number, INV-86470, to be notified through email.

In the meantime, we have a workaround for resolving this issue. Please take a moment to check for and fix the following:

  1. Navigate to the Sales Tax Center.
  2. Click View Return next to one of the returns that show overdue but are actually paid.
  3. Click to open the payment on the upper right-hand corner of the return.
  4. Delete and confirm yes, Delete.
  5. Allow the screen to update the return.
  6. Record the payment again.

For future references on managing your sales tax return, please check this article: Check how much sales tax you owe in QuickBooks Online.

We appreciate your patience as our product engineers are working to identify the cause to provide a solution. We hope to have an update soon.

I understand the frustration you're going through. The changes in the sales tax page interface can sometimes be confusing. To fix previous sales tax periods that are showing as overdue, here are the steps you can take:

  1. Review Your Records: First, double-check your sales and tax records for the periods in question. Ensure that all sales, exemptions, and deductions are accurately recorded.

  2. Contact Support: If you are using a tax software or accounting platform, reach out to their customer support. They are usually well-versed in navigating their systems and can guide you through the process specific to their platform.

  3. Check for Updates: The changes in the sales tax page may be due to software updates. Make sure you have the latest version installed, as these updates often include bug fixes and improvements to the user interface.

  4. Reconcile Payments: If you find any discrepancies, reconcile your payments. Ensure you've paid the correct amount for each period. If there are outstanding payments, settle them as soon as possible.

  5. Amend Returns: If you discover errors in your previous sales tax returns, you may need to amend them. The process for amending returns varies by jurisdiction, so consult your tax authority's website for specific instructions.

  6. Penalties and Interest: Be aware that overdue taxes may accrue penalties and interest. Contact your tax authority to discuss any penalties and interest charges and see if you can negotiate a waiver or reduction.

  7. Documentation: Keep detailed records of all your communications and actions taken to resolve this issue. This can be useful in case you need to contest penalties or interest charges.

  8. Stay Updated: Keep an eye on any further changes to the sales tax page. Tax regulations and reporting requirements can change, so it's essential to stay informed.
