Hi doodholliday

You can call the IRS E-file services to reset your 10-digit pin. Within 7-10 banking days, your PIN will be mailed to you.

Here's how:

  1. Contact 866.255.0654.
  2. Choose option 1 and then 3 for E-file questions.
  3. When you get an IRS agent, ask for the e-file 10-digit PIN department.

You might want to file your form manually while waiting for your PIN to make sure you can submit it on time.

IRS says on the phone that the software should help us set up 10 digit pin.  Getting the run around here.

Sorry, to not have an answer but just another question. Which 10 digit PIN are we talking about that we need to set up QBD e-file? The EFIN/ERO? Is that the one? And what would I use for the state?

January 27, 2019

Hi, @LeahIlanah.

Thanks for the response. Allow me to chime in and help share some information about the 10-digit e-file PIN.

This PIN is obtained after enrolling to the E-file service in QuickBooks Desktop and this is different from the EFIN/ERO. If you do not receive this PIN or have lost it, you'll need to contact the IRS to request the status of your application.

You're going to need this PIN so you can e-file your 940, 941 or 944 tax forms. Let me provide you with the following articles below for more information:

E-file and E-pay: General Info

E-File 10-digit PIN lost or missing for Enhanced Payroll

E-file 940, 941, and/or 944 Federal Forms in QuickBooks Desktop

This will get you on the right track. Please let me know if you have other questions about E-File. I'm always here to help.

Thank you for sharing this. Unfortunately, I cannot access these articles because Intuit thinks I canceled an account, and won't let me go the page. It's a known issue, that they are apparently are not able to resolve.

Is there a different link, or option to get this information?

Thank you!

Allow me to step in and help you access the articles so you can have the information needed to get you 10-digit pin.

Another way to get your 10-digit pin is to call the IRS E-file service so they can help you reset your pin. Here's their contact information provided by my colleague Catherine_B.

  1. Contact 866.255.0654.
  2. Choose option 1 and then for E-file questions.
  3. When you get an IRS agent, ask for the e-file 10-digit PIN department.

Let me know if I can help you with anything else. I'm just a comment away.

At least you know more than the techs that call me back that I pay for.  On line it states you have to mail them a letter so I am trying your way this time, you should educate those people from QB's because they don't know or have the information.  QB just removed my pin so I cannot file my 941 electronically even though I pay for it.

So frustration!!!! Laura

I have the same problem.  I upgraded to Quickbooks 22 and the pin is now gone.  I got my original pin 10 years ago and cannot locate it.

Snail-mail the return for now and try again in 1-18 months when the world has returned to a new-normal.

Hi there, Con4.

I’m here to help so you’re able to get this 5 digit PIN.

Are you referring to the 10 digit pin used for E-Filing?  If so, I suggest contacting IRS to get the PIN that you can use for filing SSA. To do so, you can check out the following website: https://www.eftps.gov/eftps/

These links did not work even when I tried in a different browser.

You are right the IRS is closed.  In 26 years in business I have NEVER needed a 10 digit pin, only my 4 digit pass code.  I guess we cannot even mail them as we are set up for e-file which does not work anymore.

I finally got an answer from IRS.  I've been filing for as long as you could e file and they said it was built into software from first usage and software updates can delete it.  You can send 941 by mail if anything like this happens esp while waiting for the mail.

I am having the exact same issue!  Please help!

July 26, 2022

Hello there, @DonnaEc.

I can see you've been through a lot in trying to acquire the 10-digit PIN for your E-file. I'm here to share some information on how you can have one.

Since the IRS provides the PIN, you’ll have to reach out to them for a PIN reset as it is considered missing or lost. Here's how:

  1. Contact 866.255.0654.
  2. Choose option 1 and then for E-file questions.
  3. Ask for the E-file 10-digit PIN when you speak with an IRS representative.

Please keep a copy of it moving forward to ensure that the PIN will not be lost again.

Furthermore, make sure you have the most recent payroll tax table to avoid any disruptions while processing your E-file/E-pay in QuickBooks.

Once you’re all set, you can file your forms through QuickBooks. Refer to the detailed steps outlined in this article: E-file and e-pay federal forms and taxes in QuickBooks Desktop Payroll Enhanced.

If you have other QuickBooks questions or concerns, just press the Reply button below. I'll be right here to help you. Keep safe!

i donot  have 10 digit pin to file fed payrole

December 5, 2022

Welcome to the Community, @milak. I'm glad to see you here.

You may enroll your business for a 10-digit pin to e-file and e-pay federal taxes and forms in QuickBooks Desktop Payroll. Here's how:

1. Set up your federal filing method.

  • Select Payroll Tax Forms & W-2s from the Employees menu. Then click the Process Payroll Forms button.
  • Select Manage Filing Methods from the Other Activities section.
  • Click Filing Methods, then select a federal form. Click Edit.
  • Under “Select how you want to file the Form…”, select Filing As Responsible Individual (Owner/Partner/Corporate Officer) for a single FEIN

2. Enroll in the IRS e-file program.

  • Select Enrollments from the Filing Methods screen.
  • Select IRS, then click Edit.
  • Follow the on-screen steps to validate your EIN and provide the legal name and address of your firm. Then click Next.
  • Enter the name, job title, email address, and phone number of the person who can be contacted by the IRS regarding your enrollment and payroll tax forms. Select Next.

Take note that this individual must be connected to your business and cannot be an accountant or third-party service provider.

  • Click Send Information.

When the agency gets your QuickBooks Desktop enrolment, it will indicate Accepted and you will be mailed a 10-digit e-file PIN.

Follow steps 1 and 2 above to resend your request if the IRS denied or did not receive your enrollment.

Once everything's good,  you may read this article to learn how to electronically file and pay federal tax forms: E-file and e-pay federal forms and taxes in QuickBooks Desktop Payroll Enhanced.

Please reach out to us again if you have further questions or concerns about your tax forms in the QuickBooks desktop payroll. We're always here to help. Have a wonderful day.

This is the correct answer for all previous posts on this issue. Neither IRS, nor Intuit informed Quickbook users to request a 10-digit e-file PIN. This is something new. Guessing none of you really lost this PIN, I suspect that none of you, just like me, never knew to enrolled to e-file with this 10-digit PIN, despite having e-filed for years without any problem in the past.

March 8, 2023

You need to enroll for the IRS 10-digit PIN using your Quickbooks software. I did not receive any notification from IRS or Intuit that this was a requirement that became effective sometime after I successfully e-filed my 2nd Qtr 2022 941. My 3rd and 4th quarter 2022 941 e-filings were both rejected.

Here are the rejection details:

Problem: The Signature (PIN) for this return is not valid for the EIN.
Solution: You must enter the 10 digit numeric PIN that the IRS has on file for your federal EIN.

To resolve: In Quickbooks > Go to your Payroll Center > click on File Forms

Go to bottom of window in the Other Activities box and click on Change Filing Method

Under Taxes click on Filing Methods (when I did this all of my forms were already set as e-file)

Click on Continue and follow the instructions to enroll for your e-file PIN.

You will receive your PIN within 45 days via us mail from the IRS.
