Question

I don't have a button in the taxes tab that allows me to begin filing taxes. How do I use QBO to file taxes?

I am trying to file my taxes and it appears the only option is to send information to my accountant. I don't have an accountant that I use to file taxes.

Before we proceed, let me know if you're referring to recording sales tax payments in QuickBooks Online (QBO). If so, this feature is available across all versions of QBO, including Simple Start (SS), Essentials, Plus, and Advanced.

 

If you're talking about e-filling 1099 or payroll forms, ensure that you have the appropriate QuickBooks Online subscription level with tax filing capabilities. Some versions may have different accessible features.

 

On the other hand, you can customize your Menu settings to display the Taxes button on the menu page. Here's how:

 

  1. Sign in to your QBO account.
  2. To edit, you can click the pencil icon ✎  beside the Menu.
  3. Select the Menu tab, and check the box for Taxes.
  4. Click Save.



If the issue persists, I recommend logging into your account using a private browser. This way, we can check if it's a browser-related issue. Too much cache build-up in your regular browser can cause unexpected behavior in the product. Please refer to the keyboard shortcuts below:

 

  • Google Chrome: Press Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Firefox: Press Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Safari: Press Command + Shift + N
  • Edge: Press Ctrl + Shift + N

 

If it works, clear your regular browser's cache to refresh the website's preferences. Also, make sure your browser is updated. Alternatively, using a different supported browser may also resolve the issue.

Thanks for responding.  I am trying to file my 2024 tax return.  While I am in the taxes tab, there is no way to begin my tax return.  I am unable to find the "Start for free" button which is described in the instructions in the help section.

To begin with, please note that Live Tax is exclusively available for S-Corp, Partnership, and Sole proprietor business types and is unavailable for Non-profit organizations and C-corp. Additionally, if you've already taken advantage of the Start for Free option or have canceled your QuickBooks Live Assisted subscription, you won't be able to use it again.

 

If you're using the business type that supports live tax or haven't utilized the start-for-free option yet, I recommend contacting our phone support to investigate the cause of this issue further.
