I have a credit for unemployment taxes for an over payment from years ago and need to figure out how to post the credit in quick books desktop. So that I can use the credit over time instead of paying the tax

Let's work together to help you post a credit for unemployment taxes resulting from an overpayment in previous years, Icewoman. I'd like to provide the steps to record and apply this credit in QuickBooks Desktop, allowing you to use it effectively over time.

Since you’d like to apply the credit to the next payment, you must first create a liability check and then apply the credit.

Here's how:

  1. On the Employees menu, select Payroll Taxes & Liabilities.
  2. Select Pay Scheduled Liabilities.
  3. In the Pay Taxes & Other Liabilities section, select the tax or liability you want to pay. Select View/Pay.
  4. Select Check/E-pay.
  5. Select the Expenses tab.
  6. Select the account where you want to apply the credit.
  7. Enter the amount of the credit (up to the amount of the check) as a negative figure in the Amount field.
  8. In the Memo field, enter an explanation of the transaction.
  9. Select Recalculate. If you still have a credit balance, you can apply it to your next payment.

Before applying the tax credit to a future payment, consider consulting your accountant to ensure the correct account is selected for proper application on your tax forms.

Furthermore, you can refer to this article to learn what to do if you receive a state tax notice of discrepancy in QBDT: Send in your payroll tax notice.

Additionally, you can also adjust your payroll liabilities in QBDT payroll to correct your employee's year-to-date payroll info.

These steps should help you manage your unemployment tax credit effectively. If you have any further questions or need additional assistance, please don't hesitate to reach out. I'm here to help.
