Importing tax/financial data from Quickbooks into TurboTax Business

Each year, our firm uses TurboTax Business to complete and file our company's taxes.  And each year, we are able to import all our company's financial data from Quickbooks into TurboTax Business, instead of having to manually enter it all.

 

Up until this year, TurboTax prompts us to select the Quickbooks file we wish to import.

This year, that option is not available in TurboTax Business.

Instead, the two options that TurboTax Business offers are:

"Yes.  Let's import from Quickbooks to save time." and

"No thanks.  I'll enter my Quickbooks info manually."

 

You would think that the option, "Yes.  Let's import from Quickbooks to save time" would be the option to select.

However, when we select that option, and then click "Continue", we get the following screen:

"Quickbooks Desktop Not Installed.", with the comments, "No Quickbooks Desktop files has been found" and "Continue Without Importing".  See the attached screenshot.

 

Rest assured that Quickbooks Desktop is very much installed.

As noted above, in past years, we have been able to search for the Quickbooks file we wish to import.

This year, that is not possible.  TurboTax Business does not provide the opportunity to search for and select the Quickbooks file we wish to import. 

 

I contacted TurboTax customer support, explained the above, and was told that it was a Quickbooks issue, and that I had to contact Quickbooks customer support.

Of course when I contacted Quickbooks customer support, I was told it was a TurboTax issue and that I had to contact TurboTax customer support.

Interestingly, when I told the TurboTax people that this was the first year we could not search for and select the Quickbooks file we wish to import, they seemed unfazed by it all, and said that they couldn't help us.

 

So I am reaching out to the community in the hope that someone can help us find a way to search for and select the Quickbooks file we wish to import into TurboTax Business.

I had your same issue. TT looked at it without any luck. Ended up downloading the 2024 QB enterprise trial and TT immediately found the software and my QB2021 pro company file and imported it.

I've got you covered, @DRH204. Let me make it up to you by making sure you get the best help available, so this gets sorted out right away. I'll also share some details about importing your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) tax information into TurboTax.

 

In situations like this, we’ll have to review your QBDT account setup. The process requires us to open your account, which I’m unable to perform here in the Community since this is a public forum and for security reasons.

 

Before reaching out to them, please take note of the following tips:

 

  • QuickBooks should be installed on the same local drive as TurboTax (not networked) and need to be registered.
  • You'll need QuickBooks Administrator access.
  • The QuickBooks company file (.qbw filename extension) must be in single-user mode and should've been opened at least once on the computer you're using to import (no need to leave it open during the import).
  • QuickBooks for Mac data must be converted to Windows before it can be imported (instructions).
  • Be sure to update your QuickBooks data before importing, so that your books match your tax return.

Thanks, Kevin_C.  Unfortunately, that did not fix the issue.

I had previously tried what you had recommended, but nonetheless, I still tried it again.  However, the outcome is still the same:  TurboTax replies with "No Quickbooks Desktop file has been found."

 

I would like to be able to search for and select the actual Quickbooks file, instead of letting TurboTax search for it.  As noted previously, in all previous versions of TurboTax, we were able to search for and select our company's Quickbooks file.  Do you know of a way to do it in TurboTax Business 2023?  And do you know why Intuit decided to remove that functionality in this year's version of TurboTax Business?

Install the trial version of QB Desktop 2023 Enterprise to make sure.

In TurboTax, if you go to the File>Import menu from the top bar, it only has the option of importing from QB 2022-2024.   So apparently they aren't supporting older versions of QB.   I'm also using QB2021 and not planning to upgrade it so looks like the only option is manual entry. 

 

Seems Intuit is really trying to force everyone to their subscription based QB model.

You can use the rial version of QBD 2022-2024 as a workaround.

Could you please provide the link to the trial version.  I could find only a trial desktop version for Canada, or the Desktop Enterprise 24.0, but no Desktop Pro version.

This does work, installed but didn't re-boot or even open the installed QBE trial APP... and TT finds the 2021 files... when it imports the data, the application opens QB 2021 and has you can log-on to the company file.

I tried it and it works!  Downloaded the trial, installed but didn't restart or open the program, and now turbotax can find and import the file.  What a frustration to have to use this workaround.  I appreciate the tip!

We have the same issue spent 4 hours or more with TurboTax they tell me that no one else has had the problem and that they'll be working on it. That after having me uninstall reinstall TurboTax asked me to upgrade QuickBooks asked me to go through a million different steps only to no avail.

Their software States this year that TurboTax home and Business will work with any QuickBooks desktop from 2007 to 2024

They required me to do the same thing. I was persistent enough that they sent me to the right person. Hopefully their investigation will result in a patch being issued for the problem. I will update when I hear something back from them.

I just reread your post and you have issues with Home and Business. I think most of us on here have had an issue with Quickbooks importing to TT Business. So not sure if the investigation will help you or not. I'll keep you updated

Same issue here. Quickbooks Desktop Pro 2021 to TurboTax Home & Business 2023 (interesting that those dates are only two years apart). The software itself provides conflicting information. At first, I also clicked the “Let’s import from Quickbooks,” but there I noted, as some here have, the parenthetical content that showed the years 2022 through 2024 apparently indicating that the only Quickbooks versions that were going to import were beginning with the 2022 version. I immediately had the feeling that I’d been duped. Nowhere in the TurboTax 2023 description did it indicate, allude, hint, or DISCLOSE that the Intuit Quickbooks version I had purchased only two years ago would not sync with its Intuit sister software program, TurboTax. 

 

Indeed, when I clicked Import I received the same “Quickbooks Desktop Not Installed” and the same “No Quickbooks Desktop files have been found.” So, I chose the manual entry option and found in the Business Income and Expenses section another option to Import Business Information from Quickbooks. The Learn More link in that section yields this information: 

 

“You can import your business information from the 2022, 2023, or 2024 versions of Quicken or QuickBooks. To import from older versions of those programs, or from other financial software, you must create a tax exchange format (TXF) file. Refer to your financial software user guide for help with preparing a TXF file.”

 

This is an acknowledgement that there is no glitch, no error, and no accident. No need to call phone support, they can’t help you. I tried. I called Quickbooks phone support and the girl made an attempt to help before she was informed by her supervisor that this was a TurboTax issue and that I needed to call TurboTax. And, yes, I called TurboTax. And, yes, the girl from TurboTax phone support immediately said… come on now, dear reader… give your best guess what the TurboTax girl said… Her immediate response was that I needed to call Quickbooks support. 

 

And, of course this is the phone support response; Quickbooks support isn’t trained on TurboTax software and vice-versa. So, as soon as you have to open one of those programs the support person for the other program says they can’t help you. And, of course, the problem is that syncing Quickbooks and TurboTax by definition REQUIRES THE USE OF BOTH PROGRAMS. And that is something that NO ONE AT INTUIT SUPPORT IS QUALIFIED to support. So, Support’s only option is to refer the customer into a loop of calling Quickbooks support and then TurboTax support and then Quickbooks support and then… Yes, I know, you get it. 

 

Fine. As I said, Learn More states “To import from older versions of those programs, or from other financial software, you must create a tax exchange format (TXF) file.” Okay. Sounds easy enough. How do I do that? “Refer to your financial software user guide for help with preparing a TXF file.” Perfect. Let’s open the Quickbooks Desktop Pro 2021 Help and get our instructions. First Help query: “Export to TXF” yields no relevant response. Second query: “.txf” yields no relevant response. In other words, even though Intuit tells us in TurboTax to refer to the Quickbooks guide “for help with preparing a TXF file,” the text “.txf” does not exist within the Quickbooks guide.

 

In summary, the Admins in this forum direct us to phone support, that puts us in an endless loop between the two different Intuit subsidiaries, to solve an issue that is not an error but rather an “on purpose.” 

 

*ADMIN, PLEASE ANSWER THIS: Why did Intuit break the link between Quickbooks Desktop Pro 2021 (and earlier versions) with TurboTax 2023? I bought Quickbooks in good faith, and so did the many people in this forum along with millions of other consumers who all trusted that Intuit would continue to act in good faith. I spent hundreds of dollars on Quickbooks and TurboTax. And, THIS SOFTWARE IS STILL IN SERVICE. 

 

That’s right, folks. According to Quickbooks Help updated 3 weeks ago, Quickbooks Desktop 2021 will be discontinued as of May 31, 2024. Which sucks on its face, but still, that means it is currently in service. Why is software that is still in service not working as intended? 

 

For the record, I am NOT an SAS kind of guy. I despise Software As Service subscriptions. Loath may be a better word. As soon as Microsoft converted Office to SAS and started pushing customers into that trap, I switched all of my business over to Google Workspace and never looked back. 

 

But this is worse than that. This is pernicious. I’ve only owned and used Quickbooks for two tax cycles and now it’s already junk, and Intuit admits that it was done on purpose. I want one of two things: Either this gets fixed…like today…I’m doing my taxes now, so TODAY; or, I WANT MY MONEY BACK… all of it… Quickbooks Desktop Pro 2021 money and TurboTax Home & Business 2023 money (yes, I know, 60 day money back guarantee…my faith in Intuit’s good faith is waning rapidly, so we’ll see).

Oh yeah, in my rant I forgot to finish the thought of the conflicting information within TurboTax. When in the Business Income and Expenses section, on the Import Business Information line click Update. There it will ask you "Where do you want to import from?" Click the Learn More (a different Learn More than above) and you will get this: 

 

Importing From QuickBooks
QuickBooks

- To import data from QuickBooks, you must have QuickBooks 2007 through 2024.

- If you want to transfer information from last year's return, you must do so before you import your information.

- Enter all your financial information for the year in QuickBooks before you import your file into TurboTax.

- It is helpful to assign tax forms and lines to your QuickBooks data before importing.

Other requirements for importing data from QuickBooks

- It must be done by the QuickBooks Administrator.

- The QuickBooks company file that you want to import must be in single-user mode.

See your QuickBooks on-screen help for more information.

 

So, here any Quickbooks as early as 2007 should work. Yet, elsewhere, it says it only goes back to 2022 (which is one year and one month ago). WHERE IT SAYS NOTHING IS ON THE PACKAGE AND/OR IN THE DESCRIPTION BEFORE YOU BUY IT.

In an attempt to be productive, how do we follow Intuit’s instructions in TurboTax regarding Quickbooks? As noted above, in TurboTax in the Business Income and Expenses section under Import Business Information is a Learn More link that says:

 

“You can import your business information from the 2022, 2023, or 2024 versions of Quicken or QuickBooks. To import from older versions of those programs, or from other financial software, you must create a tax exchange format (TXF) file. Refer to your financial software user guide for help with preparing a TXF file.”

 

Okay. It’s telling us clearly, plainly, and directly to go to QuickBooks and create a TXF. It’s telling us clearly, plainly, and directly to refer to our QuickBooks user guide for help with preparing a TXF file. I referred to my QuickBooks guide for help with preparing a TXF file, searched online, and even called a priest to pray for an answer. I couldn’t find it. Intuit says in TurboTax that I can find this information in QuickBooks, and that Quickbooks has the ability to perform the action needed.  I’m not the most brilliant man on earth, but shouldn’t the average customer be able to follow this simple and direct line of instruction and expect to arrive at the tools and information promised? So, what is the secret? 

 

How do we create a TXF file in QuickBooks that we can import into TurboTax? Intuit says we can do it, so… let’s have it.

I have the same problem. I believe they are forcing all of us to shift to the online Quickbooks or find an alternate company/ tax software. 

I am also surprised that they will not let us upload the file.
