Payroll - Can I make a penalty payment through QB - electronic payment system? and how?

A bi-weekly payment did not go through on time and was resubmitted 2 weeks later .     I have received a penalty and would like to see if it can be paid through QB electronically and how.

Make your Pay Liability check and click on the Expenses tab. Enter a Penalty here. Hit Recalc. This is the Total Payment to send.

Hello there, @MMurdy.

 

Allow me to share some information about paying penalties in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT).

 

Yes, you can file the penalty electronically. When you have existing liabilities under the Pay Liabilities tab, you can add the penalty amount under the Expenses column.

 

Here's how:

 

  1. Click Employees at the top menu bar.
  2. Select Payroll Center.
  3. Go to the Pay Liabilities column.
  4. Select on liability by putting a check-mark on the box beside it.
  5. Click View/Pay.
  6. Go to the Expenses column, under the Liability Payment - Checking page.
  7. Click Add new to add the penalty account under the Account column.
  8. Click Save and Close.
  9. Fill in the necessary information and make sure to click on E-payment beside Check.
  10. Click Recalculate to recalculate the amount.
  11. Proceed with the process.

I am still confused on how to record a payroll penalty in QB

I want to make sure you can pay your penalty together with your e-payments.

 

My peer @Angelyn_T provided the correct steps to add the penalty and interest on your liability checks. Let me show you how it is done:

 

  1. Go to the Employees menu and click Payroll Taxes and Liabilities.
  2. Choose Pay Scheduled Liabilities.
  3. On the Pay Taxes & Other Liabilities window, click the tax liability you'd like to pay then select View/Pay.
  4. On the Expenses section of the liability check, add the Penalty(Expense) and the Amount. Click Recalculate.
  5. Click the E-pay button.
  6. Enter your E-payment credentials in the E-pay Login window, then click Submit.

  7. Click Close.
