Question

Texas Unemployment Tax %

I would like some guidance on the correct TEXAS UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE (UI) RATE to use for my business. I searched the Texas Workforce Commission website -

https://www.twc.texas.gov/businesses/unemployment-insurance-tax-rates

and learned:

Your Effective Tax Rate for 2020 = General Tax Rate (GTR) + Replenishment Tax Rate (RTR) + Obligation Assessment Rate (OA) + Deficit Tax Rate (DTR) + Employment and Training Investment Assessment (ETIA)

Minimum Tax Rate for 2020 is 0.31 percent.

Maximum Tax Rate for 2020 is 6.31 percent.

Currently I am using the max rate of 6.31%, but I would LOVE to use lower rate. Anyone know how to nail down the exact tax rate? Or have a phone number I can call where someone will answer?

Thank you.

Hello there, @tfaust.

It's nice seeing your post today. I'd be glad to guide you as to when and how to fix your SUI taxes in QuickBooks.

The State Unemployment Insurance (SUI) rates change periodically. Your state agency will notify you of the SUI rate changes so you'll know your correct rate and when its effective date.

For general tax questions, you can visit the Texas Payroll Tax Compliance page, then go to the Unemployment Tax section to get their phone number.

For future reference, ensure your SUI tax rate is updated with the current one before making any adjustments.

Then, visit this article for the step-by-step guide on how to enter the SUI tax adjustment to correct employee's paychecks: Entering wage base and tax adjustment to correct employee's quarter (qtd) or year to date (ytd) to date year total.

I always want to make sure you have the information you need. Let me know how it goes by clicking the Reply button below. Stay safe.

Thanks for checking on me. I did some additional work on the Texas Workforce Commission website and located the % I can use. My issue was resolved.

My TWC gross wages does not match my 941s each quarter gross wages

I'm here to share some information about the TWC gross wages and your 941, kathyewhite.

The TWC Gross Wages and 941 form don't necessarily have to match because some of your employees income is not claimed because of pre-tax and insurance payments. That's the reason why your quarterly federal return does not equal the Texas Workforce Commission Gross Wages.

You'll want to run a payroll report so you'll be able to see your taxes. In the same manner, I recommend reaching out to our QuickBooks Online Payroll Team to check if there's a need to adjust your taxes. To do this, follow the steps below:

  1. Click Help at the top right.
  2. Select Contact us to connect with a live support agent.
  3. Enter a brief discussion of your concern, then click Continue.
  4. Select Start messaging or Get a callback.

Moreover, when you're paying your taxes online, you'll have to note the processing times when dealing with Federal and state taxes. For more information on how you pay and file payroll taxes and forms, learn from this article for your quick guide: Pay and File Payroll Taxes and Forms In Online Payroll.
