Update to handle new 1099-NEC forms for QB Pro 2017 desktop?

Will any patches or updates be made available for those that use QB Pro 2017 Desktop so we can print the latest version of the 1099-NEC forms?  For the 2020 tax year, there was a work-around that we used by changing the box numbers so the amounts would print correctly on the NEC forms.  But now I've been told the IRS has changed the NEC forms yet again, to print 3 per page, that we will have to use for the 2021 tax year.  The work-around will no longer work.

Will Intuit offer any assistance at all to those of us with slightly older versions of Quickbooks so we can print our tax forms?

What the reps appear go be trying to communicate, but without actually saying it, is  "No".

Intuit will not update sunset versions of QuickBooks with new tax forms, which are typically delivered via the payroll updates, and which in turn are no longer available once your product sunsets (expires, dies, isn't supported anymore.)

QB 2017 died, from Intuit's POV, over a year ago. Currently Versions 2019, 2020, and 2021 are supported.

Hi there, JenFleet.

Thanks for reaching out to us. I'm here to assist you with your concern about the 1099-NEC updates.

I've got some steps you may consider doing to print the latest 1099-NEC forms. Please check this out:

  1. Go to the Edit  menu and select Preferences.
  2. Choose Tax: 1099 tab in the left panel.
  3. Select Company Preferences.
  4. Make sure that the Yes radio button in the Do you file 1099-MISC forms? is enable.

If the same thing happens, you'll want to consider upgrading your QuickBooks Desktop to the latest version. This way, you'll have uninterrupted access to our latest payroll updates and other services.

Please reach back out to me here with any additional information on the issue, so I can get you taken care of.

@GlinetteC

The question was: "Will Intuit offer any assistance at all to those of us with slightly older versions of Quickbooks so we can print our tax forms?"

I don't think you answered it.

The OP doesn't want to know how to turn on 1099's. They've clearly already done that.

Allow me to join this thread and clear things up, Jen.

Before anything else, I'd like to thank @BigRedConsulting for the clarification.

I can see how important it is to your business to be able to print your 1099-NEC form. QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) released an announcement that older versions of QBDT can no longer access Live support and other services.

Rest assured you can still access your QBDT 2018. However, add-on services will be unavailable to you. To learn more about this, feel free to check this article for reference: QuickBooks Desktop service discontinuation policy and upgrade information.

In addition to this, you'll want to upgrade your QBDT to the latest versions (2019,2020,2021). This way, we can ensure you'll be able to print the latest 1099-NEC forms.

Once you've upgraded your QBDT, you can now confidently print and file your 1099's whenever you're ready.

You can always get back to me if you have any other questions about printing your 1099-NEC. You can also add in your reply if you have other QuickBooks concerns. I'll be here to help and ensure to keep you on the right track.

The updated information is here, Julie.

Allow me to share updates about the 1099 NEC form in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT). This way, you can file them on time.

Upon checking our sample QBDT account, the 1099 NEC forms are already available. Make sure that your account is in the latest version  so that you can print the updated form. Also, this is to ensure you have the latest features and fixes.

Here's how:

  1. When you open QuickBooks, you'll get a message about upgrading your account.
  2. Select Upgrade Now.
  3. Pick Keep old version on my computer if you want to keep your current QuickBooks.
  4. Click Let's go and choose Open QuickBooks

For more details, see this article: Upgrade QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus, Premier Plus, or Enterprise.

Once complete, recheck the form if it's already available on your side. If you already see it, you will now be able to print and file the form.

You can check out some of these guides below for some additional insight into the 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC forms:

If you have any other concerns or follow-up questions about filing your forms in QBDT, you can always get back to me in this thread. I’d be happy to assist you. Keep safe, Julie.

I have been trying to do a trial run of 1099-Nec forms.  It is not allowing me to print on new 3 per page forms - are you going to update so we can print by year end?

December 16, 2021

Hi there, @RMB65.

The release update will most likely be implemented before the 1099 filing season begins. And, release updates are created for all supported versions.

Please know that its preprinted copies are only compatible with QuickBooks 2020 or later versions. If you're using a lower version, I'd recommend upgrading it so you can print them. You can check out this article for further info: How to Upgrade to a New Version of QBDT from within the Program.

Additionally, these articles offer even more details about filing 1099 in your Desktop account:

Intuit is currently selling the 3-up forms and they say they work with QuickBooks:

https://intuitmarket.intuit.com/tax-forms/1099-forms

The site says QB 2020+, though I chatted with a rep and he said the site is wrong and the forms work with 2019+, so all currently-supported versions of QuickBooks.

December 23, 2021

Yes. The updated format of the 1099 NEC will work fine with QB 2019 and above. You will just need to wait for the release update for all supported QB version so it can print the 3 forms per page 1099 NEC.

December 24, 2021

maybe they just noticed that the feds printed 3 to a page this year...so no getting ahead of the game on printing 1099 nec's..waiting..not so patiently...but grateful to see at the end of the string that there is some correct information and that qb desktop will be doing an update...hopefully before the 31st. anyone please confirm.

Has anyone gotten ANY version of Quickbooks to print 3 per page 1099-NEC ??? Please share what version you used if successful. I have downloaded all patches / updates etc in both Desktop Enterprise 19 and Desktop Pro Premier 2021 and they are still not working. Please let our community know if anyone has had sucess yet. So far Quickbooks Reps have been completely unhelpful

Thanks for chiming in the thread, @shelliott423.

Allow me to share an update about your 1099-NEC forms printing concern.

Below are the releases required to print 1099 NEC forms in QuickBooks Desktop for Windows

  • QuickBooks 2022/Enterprise 22 - R3_71 (or later)
  • QuickBooks 2021/Enterprise 21 - R8_62 (or later)
  • QuickBooks 2020/Enterprise 20 - RR13_39 (or later)
  • QuickBooks 2019/Enterprise 19 - R16_55 (or later)

When getting the most updated release for QBDT, I'd suggest enabling the Reset Update option. This will fix errors related to any critical update, as well as other possible issues within the product. Let me guide you how:

  1. Navigate to the Help menu and choose Update QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. Then, go to the Update Now tab.
  3. Check the box for Reset Update.
  4. Next, click Get Updates.

Once done, I'd recommend closing your QBDT program and restarting your computer.

If you’ve can't still see the 3-part 1099 capability after performing the instructions above, the next step is to uninstall and reinstall your QBDT
