Hello,

I am getting and error when I try to access payroll setup from QB Desktop. The error code is 05396-40000. I have tried rebuilding the data, verifying the data, and using the QuickBooks tool hub app. Nothing seems to be working. Thanks for any help in advance!

Thank you for adding a screenshot, spcc.

I appreciate you for performing some troubleshooting steps to isolate the issue.

As a final troubleshooting measure, let's click View report to find the error message. Here's how:

  1. On the QuickBooks Payroll Setup 2024 - Error page, click View report.
  2. Double-click the file ReportHeader.xml
  3. Press CTRL F on your keyboard to open the search box. Then, enter Exception String 0 in the search field.

From there, let's fix it based on the error message you see. You can check this article that has detailed information on how you can fix the error you see: Step 2: Fix the errors.

Once the error is fixed, you can review this reference on how you can set up payroll successfully: Get started with QuickBooks Desktop Payroll.

You can always post in the forum whenever you have concerns about setting up payroll.

I didn't see an error message listed that matched what the value says for mine which is

System.Exception: exception thrown in background task at Intuit.QuickBooks.Payroll.Shared.Util.IndeterminateProgressWorker.DoWorkInternal

Should I try uninstalling and reinstalling the software?

I am having the same error when adding a new client to payroll.  I am using Desktop Pro 2021.

This needs to be fixed NOW.  January is our busy month for year end payroll items.  Also first payroll of the year with new rates taking effect.

I have the same error code - Payroll setup not working   -  error code 05396 40000

Hours on the phone with them yesterday and no solution other than to try and upgrade to 2024 Pro Plus and maybe that would fix the problem.

I am now supposedly on the same list to email when they find a solution!!

Our office is having the same issue with QuickBooks 2024.

I spent 9 hours on the phone with them on Tuesday, 2 additional on Wednesday.  Upgrade from 2021 to 2022 still same error....This is a known issue and told me yesterday afternoon (1/3/24) it will be fixed in 24-48 hours.  DO BETTER QUICKBOOKS!

This is the error message I get. Anyone else?

‹Name>Exception String 0</Name>

‹Value>System. Exception: exception thrown in background task at Intuit.QuickBooks.Payroll.Shared Util.IndeterminateProgressWorker.DoworkInternal (String initialProgress) at Intuit-QuickBooks, Payroll.Shared.Util. I am running 2023 Window Desktop

January 4, 2024

I am also having the same issue. I talked to my accountant about it, and several other clients of hers are having the same problem. I have reported the issue at least five times. I have upgraded from Pro 2021 to Pro Plus 2024. I have tried all of the BS tech support has suggested. My accountant called yesterday and was basically told that they are working on it, but they didn't know when this was going to be fixed. Seriously, figure it out, do a patch, and make all of our lives a little bit easier. This is not the time for this to be happening! We shouldn't have to contact anyone to be "put on a list". Quickbooks knows this is a problem, and should assume that all customers with desktop versions and payroll are having this problem. Do better Intuit.

January 4, 2024

Same error here with Accountant's version 2021, 2022, 2023 - tried all things to fix it including using different computers and accessing files from the server and from a local C drive with success.  Hoping this is fixed quickly.  I read this article to the customer service rep to save some time.  He is adding me as an affected user.

January 4, 2024

Same here too. Joining so QB can see how many people are having this issue and hopefully get notified when there is a solution. Unable to change tax rates, had to run payroll with incorrect taxes. The error code Im getting System.Exception: exception thrown in background task at Intuit.QuickBooks.Payroll.Shared.Util.IndeterminateProgressWorker.DoWorkInternal

was not listed in the fixes one support person previously posted. Called payroll support, they know about the issue, investigation has been elevated, they will email me when there is a resolution. Nothing can be done in the meantime, no way to access payroll setup otherwise.

I am running QBD pro 2021 and am having the same problem trying to change any payroll liability frequencies or efile my W2's for 2023.  I've called twice and they are still saying they are working on the error.  Unfortunately this is not helping us when these items need to be completed by January 31, 2024!!!!

January 5, 2024

Here is an email that I got - it really makes me feel warm and fuzzy - NOT

Engineers are aware of the issue and it is in the process of being prioritized/investigated. Although this is being actively looked at, we do not have an ETA for resolution at this time.

Well they better figure it out before the month end and people are required to do W-2 and such.

January 5, 2024

I know...this seems to be a yearly problem with QB.

When they told me I would be placed on the same list, then they had the nerve to try to sell me a "platform" for 50% off for PR and QB subscription.

I asked them if their "platform" was also experiencing these errors, they said NO!!

It sounds very strange that their PR platform is not experiencing these problems!!
