Making Tax Digital (MTD) Drop-in Session | Post Your Question!

Since April 2019, Making Tax Digital (MTD) rules have only applied to businesses with a VAT taxable turnover above the £85,000 threshold. But the government plans to roll out this digital transformation across the entire tax system.

This may now change the way your business operates, so we want to make sure you're fully informed of the changes. You can find our MTD FAQ page here for more.

If you still have a question, please feel free to post below and an expert will answer you.

The HMRC closed my portal due to physhing concerns, we have now set up a new portal which works, and QB is activated for VAT transactions. However my PAYE FPS submissions are failing, I know the gateway credentials are correct. HMRC say they can't see any failed submissions, although I've tried more than a dozen times. Where is it going wrong? I've ticked "Save Gateway credentials" in QB but it still asks for the password every time. I've renewed the credentials in the MTD configuration section, and cycled the HMRC connection, still no joy.

Hi DrMouse, thanks for joining this thread.

Please note that the authorisation process in QuickBooks will accept PAYE credentials as well as VAT ones, but the credentials for your PAYE and VAT accounts with HMRC will be different. Please ensure that you're using the correct credentials when connecting in QuickBooks.

If you're still unable to submit after checking this, contact us directly by chat or on 0808 234 5337. We'll be able to take some account details to check the specific error being returned from HMRC. 🙂

Hello!

I have two VAT numbers - one for my consulting business that I already use QB for (one email address, one Government Gateway ID), and I now have a separate VAT number for a holiday let partnership with my husband (different email address, different government ID). Is it possible to set this second MTD connection through my existing QB account, or do I need a separate account?

Thank you!

January 30, 2024

Hello Toppage, thanks for posting on this thread on the Community page, so you would need to have a separate account for this, as you can only use one QuickBooks account per business so with it being two separate businesses you will need to purchase another QuickBooks account.

Cannot connect to HMRC and the VAT number is correct

February 5, 2024

I keep getting this error message
CLIENT_OR_AGENT_NOT_AUTHORISED

February 6, 2024

Thank you for providing the specific error, VRNI. Let me share some insights regarding this.

The QuickBooks Online (QBO) error CLIENT_OR_AGENT_NOT_AUTHORIZED commonly appears when you need to reauthorize the connection between QuickBooks Online and HMRC, when you set up Making Tax Digital (MTD) and the Value-Added Tax (VAT) registration number in QuickBooks does not match HMRC's records, or when you haven't entered the correct credentials for MTD provided by HMRC.

Since you've mentioned that you can't connect to HMRC yet the VAT number is correct, it's best to check the email confirmation from HMRC. This email will confirm whether or not your connection has been successful. Please know that this can take up to 72 hours. This will have your new MTD credentials which you'll need to set up the MTD in QuickBooks.

I'll leave you with some resources to use while setting your MTD and to learn more about the reasons why this error happens:

Furthermore, you can also submit a VAT return to HMRC using MTD in QBO

Feel free to leave a comment if you have further questions or information and we'll be right there to assist you.

We have a Ltd co and Partnership and the Ltd co has changed fine to our HMRC details but not the partnership

June 20, 2024

Hello Sarah, thanks for reaching out about the MTD connection. The error you receiving could be a few things.

*It could be the VAT number in QB does not match HMRC records.

*Or that the gateway information is incorrect in QB.

So if you could check those.

If they are both correct if you can disconnect and then reconnect the MTD connection.

We've included a help article here, no.6 on the article is the error you are receiving and it has the steps in more detail to resolve.

Any questions ot if you receive the same issue after trying the above, let us know.

Thanks.

Thank you i've checked the VAT number is correct.

How do i check the gateway information?

August 5, 2024

Hi I keep getting this error message: CLIENT_OR_AGENT_NOT_AUTHORISED

It has been 18 months since I signed up for MTD. I have disconnected and reconnected multiple times, both in the account settings and the VAT settings.

I have also checked the VAT number which  is correct but it is still saying something isn’t right.

Hi JimDBS Thanks for reaching out to us here on the Community. The Client and/or agent not authorised message indicates that your MTD account within your HMRC portal needs reauthorising, we recommend that you reach out to HMRC for further assistance.

Hi

I have been submitting my VAT return via Quickbooks since early 2020 with no issues at all. Have been trying to submit my July one for the last week, but keep getting a message 'We can't connect to HMRC right now'. I have pressed the green 'Take Action' button, and followed the various links, but nothing has changed. My actual VAT return for this period on Quickbooks is correct, so the underlying data is fine but I just can't send it on.

Help would be most appreciated! Cheers.

We are getting an error connecting to HMRC MTD for the last 2 weeks with this error code CLIENT_OR_AGENT_NOT_AUTHORISED

We have tried all steps in help (switching of MTD and back on etc.) and can find no way of re-authorising the connection.  We have used MTD successfully for a long time and all the VAT details are correct. Logging on to HMRC also has no help on this issue.  Please can you help?!
