Call from "Quickbooks Support Team" - Fraud?

I just received a call from someone claiming to be from Quickbooks Support Team.  He gave me phone number [removed] and said his name was Ronald.  He had an Indian accent.  He claimed they were trying to do an automatic security upgrade and for some reason it was not working on our system.  This seems like a scam.  I gave them no information but he did have the first name of the owner.  I told him I'd call back when I have time.  I asked him to clarify that he is with Quickbooks and he confirmed.  I have NEVER received a call from QB.  Is this a scam?

Hello, @carefree123.

Thanks for bringing this matter to our attention. I'm here to help share on how we can prevent these fraud calls from parties claiming to be affiliated with Intuit.

As mentioned by the previous replies on this thread, outbound calls from a QuickBooks representative should not ask for any personal information. If you keep receiving this kind of call, I'd suggest reporting this information through our email.

Don't hesitate to let me know if you have other questions about fraudulent calls. I'll be around to help.

Having trouble opening my QB2016, so I looked online for QuickBooks support and called QB Tech Infosystems LLC at [removed].  Got call back from “Brad Smith” at [removed].  He informed me my 2016 was out of date and he couldn’t help.  Needed to upgrade to QB2022 for $549.00 plus $250 to transfer files due to change in format.

He went into my computer to find and transfer files, gave me a new license number [removed], Prod [removed], and downloaded on my computer.  It’s been working fine and I’ve checked my accounts every couple of days.  So, no red flags.

Then on 11/2/22 I started receiving calls from [removed], ‘Brad Smith’ telling me he was getting error warnings on my account and needed me to let him check my computer.  I told him I was out on an appointment & put him off thinking this was strange as he couldn’t tell me what the error warnings were.  I made a call back appointment with him but didn’t take the call then as I was uncomfortable with the situation.  He continued to call me daily 2-3 times per day but I didn’t take the calls.

Today, 11/17/22, I contacted Intuit help link and discovered that the license # he’d provided was actually active but not under my name.  I worked with Michaela via CHAT, who was very helpful and we resolved the problem.  Unfortunately I had to pay AGAIN to update my account since the prior charge was a fraud!

PLEASE TRACK THESE PEOPLE DOWN AND PROSECUTE!  I am a self employed/retired individual who does not have excess funds to deal with these issues.  I try to be so very careful with my online accounts but thought I had contacted the company directly for assistance as they have impressive online presence/website.  Obviously that wasn’t the case.

A scammer just called me today and tried to tell me that my card payment for my annual subscription didn't go through. He said his name was "Christopher" and left a phone number of [removed].

I got a call from a Mr. Robert Miller claiming to be from Quick Books support and he said my auto renewal was declined.  He was calling from 833-425-8743.  I called him back and I could barely understand him with his accent.

He said my card on file was declined.   I was skeptical because our quickbooks is not associated with a card?

He would email me an invoice. I said I should be able to go an update any payment methods online,

Is this a scam?

Thanks

The number did not immediately trace back to Intuit/QBs, so my initial reaction is YES, it was a scam.

But rule # 1 is to NEVER call these numbers back!!!!  Go to your records and find the number you have for Intuit (or any other Company) and use it to call back.  If it was really Intuit/QBs they will be able to transfer you to the right place or at least confirm that number is one of theirs even if they can't transfer you.

Using a number you have vs the one someone left in a message can pretty much eliminate the chance of connecting with someone that "sounds" like they're QBs.  And if you can't find the number, then you can always contact them through the Help Menu from within your QBs program.

Couple weeks ago when in Quickbooks Online a box popped up saying "share temporary access to your Quicbkooks" and of course we would click the deny button.  It kept doing this off and on and we called Quickbooks technical support.  They said that it would be an internet issue, they could not say if it was hackers.

We were concerned because Quickbooks could not tell us anything, even though the log access history showed an outside source trying to access.  We stopped accessing through that computer and internet because there was no answers.

Fast forward to today and now at our office site, with high security internet, we got the message again, stating "share temporary access to your Quickbooks" we would then have to say deny and then a few mintues later it would do it again.  Is there fraud issues going on with Quickbooks Online and has anybody else came across this?

Thank you for letting us know about your experience, @cdavis170.

Fraudulent acts are common nowadays. As a result, QuickBooks follows strong guidelines and policies to safeguard all of your personal information.

To prevent your account data, you install antivirus software and keep it up to date, as well as your browser. Above all, do not respond to emails requesting information about your account, password, banking, or credit card.

I just got a call as well! And I find it VERY disturbing that I got that Fraud call just a few days after calling Quikbooks for help. The first call I made seemed to be answered in a foreign country - as is often the case for help-lines. The operator had no idea how to help me and gave me horrible service so I tried again the following day and that operator was able to help me. It took over 30 minutes to figure out a solution to my tough problem so I'm pleased with that operator! - Who didn't seem to be from a foreign country. As politically incorrect as this sounds, I can honestly say the Fraud caller who left me a message was of the same sounding country. When I typed that phone number (nothing else but the phone number) into Google, this Fraud thread came up. So I have to wonder how this person got my number and so interestingly called me just after I called Quickbooks days before. This person said they were "in charge of my account..."

Quickbooks needs to review how hard it is when my call comes in to an operator to see, copy and take that phone number home or send to their friends and family who run Fraud scams. I honestly believe that first caller gave (or sold) my number to someone they know.

I received a call from Alex.  Said he was with QuickBooks wanted me to fix something on my quickbooks that I was loosing data out the back end.  Gave me a call back number of 800-690-0802 ext 102.  When I called it they answered Quickbooks.  thinking this is a scam

@amy109   If you read through this thread, you'll see that there are a LOT of posts that let you know  that QB will never contact you, unless you request a callback.

Therefore, the call you received, was a scam. That's how they gain access to your computer and plant bugs and crap there.

We received same call this morning. This A-Hole still out there causing trouble

Thank you for joining this thread and let us know that you received the same call, @TheMartyMizer.

A QuickBooks representative won't ask for any account information from you during outbound calls. Before taking action, they will ensure you are the account's principal contact or administrator. You can visit our Online Security Center website if you keep receiving the same call or encounter any fraudulent activity. Then, select Go to security to view the list of suspicious emails and actions or report things you encountered. Hello today I received a message saying exactly what others reporting that my payment did not go thru. I google the number and the subject and received this thread. I figured it was a scam. The phone numbers were 877 -920 4552 and called from 877 7835477. Hope this helps others. I am a desktop user so I don't have a monthly subscription. I do have QB Payroll thought and I checked that account, nothing was out of place for the payments. Thank, Sue

Just to add to this thread, I received a call a few minutes ago from [removed]. The caller identified herself as a "Quickbooks customer service agent". She asked for my thoughts and concerns related to my Quickbooks subscription. When I lept into a description of my frustration with the new pricing model, she disconnected. I called back when I realized the call could be fraudulent. My carrier cannot reach the number I've listed. If this was, indeed, a fraudulent call, I find it disturbing that they know I'm a QuickBooks user.

I find it strange too. How do they know?

August 17, 2023

I was contacted by these people as well.... unfortunately I feel for their skeam.  Am still attempting top get my money back.  My credit card company, Chase, refunded  my funds then recharged the account.  I'm not happy with them either.  This is total fraud.

Yes I just received two calls they say I need to pay for an Annual Service Renewal. But Stacie Pro Advisor could not tell me how much the Fee was. So I was transferred to someone else who said "Thank you for calling" I told her I did not call them they called me. But again did not even know the name of the business in which they were calling. So I got off the phone and got a repeat call from Jasmine and which I could not understand what she was saying but finally she did say can she call back in an hour. Sure I said no one called me back.

So is there an Annual Service Renewal Fee?

And I think since it is an accounting software that I should get an actual bill as back up for the auditors.

Hi there, @bettyj03c15. I appreciate you for sharing with us your experience. This is something Intuit doesn't want you to come across in the future.

QuickBooks Desktop has migrated to a yearly subscription-based license. This change entails the requirement to renew your plan on an annual basis to maintain access and use of the program. However, we don't call customers about plan payments unless you raised an issue with our support team and scheduled a callback. Normally, the Primary user will receive emails about renewals.

For now, I'd suggest logging in to CAMPS. The Products & Services section of CAMPs shows all your registered Desktop apps and subscriptions. This is where you can find info license info or download any versions of QuickBooks Desktop you see.

Here's how:

  1. Sign in to camps.intuit.com. Or learn more about signing in.
  2. Find your app or subscription in the Products & Services list.
  3. Select Details, then Download.
  4. Install QuickBooks Desktop.

For more information, see this article: Manage your QuickBooks Desktop subscriptions and services. You may also contact our Customer Support Team to verify your subscription and report this incident. To reach them, open this article: Contact QuickBooks Desktop support.

On the other hand, I want to make sure this will not happen again. That's why I'm here to route you to the place where scam calls should be reported. To protect your security and privacy, here's how you can report this:

  1. Head to this link: https://security.intuit.com/.
  2. Next, click the Contact Us button.
  3. Then, scroll down and look for Report technical support scams section and select it.

For more information, please visit this page: Identify suspicious activity, phishing scams, and potential fraud.

There are a number of help articles and even video tutorials available on our QuickBooks Help page that can help you with your QuickBooks Desktop tasks. Simply browse from there and click the categories you need.

Please know that you're always welcome to reply to this thread for any security issues or if you have follow-up questions about your subscription. I'm more than happy to assist you. Take care and have a good one.
