Call from "Quickbooks Support Team" - Fraud?

I just received a call from someone claiming to be from Quickbooks Support Team.  He gave me phone number [removed] and said his name was Ronald.  He had an Indian accent.  He claimed they were trying to do an automatic security upgrade and for some reason it was not working on our system.  This seems like a scam.  I gave them no information but he did have the first name of the owner.  I told him I'd call back when I have time.  I asked him to clarify that he is with Quickbooks and he confirmed.  I have NEVER received a call from QB.  Is this a scam?

Hello, @carefree123.

Thanks for bringing this matter to our attention. I'm here to help share on how we can prevent these fraud calls from parties claiming to be affiliated with Intuit.

As mentioned by the previous replies on this thread, outbound calls from a QuickBooks representative should not ask for any personal information. If you keep receiving this kind of call, I'd suggest reporting this information through our email.

Don't hesitate to let me know if you have other questions about fraudulent calls. I'll be around to help.

I received a call from someone from this number (877) 959-7773 today asking for an updated credit card for new services that includes our personal account manager that is not included with what we already have in place. is this something we have to pay for now?

@AAIS

Ignore it as I mentioned earlier.

Just wanted to let you know that this is still happening after 4 years.   They even use the same phone number which comes up as Intuit Inc.    [removed].  They are very convincing and I suspect have past stolen data from Intuit registrations of QB Pro products.   They sent me an email with very complete registration information for my QB Pro products asking to help me renew my Support subscription. I continue to receive phone calls from this number on a weekly basis on my cellphone.

Luckily, we had just migrated to online so I told him that and that we didn't need support for Pro any longer.  He offered to help with our migration issues and I said that sounded good.

To help me with our migration issues he asked for my cellphone number and had me install a LogMeIn" software program..  I though this odd because previous calls always used the two other software applications (one is called Glance) but went ahead with it because they were always having trouble connecting.

He asked to me to go to various screens but I kept talking his ear off about my migration issues so I kept steering him towards those screens.  He said he could help but needed to take my payment first, before he could begin.  This raised a red flag and I told him I thought support was free with our Online subscription.  It told him this sounded like he was about to ask for my credit card info and hung up.

After I hung up I I checked my search engine for issues with QB support payment phishing and found a number of articles about it including about the very complete registration information in their email. I checked my running processes and noticed that LogMeIn was still active.  I found out the LogMeIn software was being abused by hackers because it still allowed trial subscriptions.  I  terminated the LogMeIn session and uninstalled it per the instructions on the article.   I rebooted the PC just in case and made sure the software didn't reload.

It was very scary because these people were very convincing and had very complete data on our registrations.  If I didn't happen to be mostly be our technical contact for our QB Pro (the IT guy) I never would have realized what was going on.  Also, we were so frustrated with  learning how to get QB Online going after using Pro for so long that we were desperately seeking another contact for online support even if we had to pay for it in order to complete the migration. We have a number of accounting firm contacts and tax accountants as clients but none of them could find contacts for migration support, either.  Everybody just knew people who entered the data and ran reports.

Two weeks later I still get calls from the [removed] phone number (even left voicemail) but I've blocked it, now.   Our QB Support calls are getting to be much better quality now that we know more.    Especially when we began addressing payroll issues, it appeared that the support personnel giving us callbacks were much more knowledgeable and we didn't need to be escalated.  We also learned that if we had a specific error message (even though it was ridiculously vague) we could click on it and get more specific support.

The chat assistant was entirely useless and actually hinders the user from getting into communication with support personnel.  It's kind of like the "Track a package" option with FedEx or UPS which won't allow you to say "speak with a real person".

@justmigratedtoonline

I noticed you mentioned issues migrating to QBO. Any specific concern? Why don't you just stick with QBD?

I just received a phone call from a restricted number. The man told me his name, which I did not understand as he had a heavy accent. He proceeded to tell me the company's yearly subscription is due and the card on file had incomplete information. I thought about it as he was spewing his crap, told him he was smoking crack and hung up the phone. No other phone calls so far or emails. I happen to monitor the company's business very close and know when our subscription payments are due and I know Quickbooks will not call me regarding our subscription. Bummed me out there was no phone number, but it is probably spoofed anyway.

Smart move calling them on it and hanging up.  It is a scam.  You're right that QB will never call you for payment.  They just lock you out.

I can't believe this scam is still a thing!  It is 11/7/2023 and the same 858 telephone number is still actively trying to put fear into unsuspecting consumers.  I have also received an email today with the same bogus threats. My primary indication that this call was not legitimate was the caller ID sain "Unavailable" rather than the ever present "Intuit" that I see when QB really does call me.

No real surprise.  Scams like this will be around for a LONG time.

Only real way to get rid of it is to get a LOT of people to start hounding their Congress Critters!  The phone companies have the ability to stop the calls, but right now if they do they'd probably be sued for impeding business.  It's not up to them to say what business can make phone calls and which cannot.  You'd think they could, but then if you really think about it you get how the scammers could sue and make more money.

So until there are some hard Consumer laws to let us Auto Ignore those kind of calls, we're just going to keep seeing them.

I am 71 and I fell for that scam in March 22, 2023.  I was scared and computer crashed I paid 5000.00 plus tax

they uninstalled re installed quickbooks wiped a

everything on my computer.  Then they called again 2 days (12.12.23)  ago same kind of stuff.  I started to cry he said he would fix it today for free and call me in January.  My son called quickbooks direct they told him tell your mother to hang up immediately that was after they had uninstalled QB and reinstalled.  I have blocked their number.

Maybe Quickbooks should add on their HELP List verify for fraud It might deter the scammers if you have this option.

@JBD23

Do you still have any outstanding issue with QB Desktop?

December 18, 2023

yes he is calling my landline number leaving messages to return call 2x so far.  [removed].  (Quickbooks hacker) Trying to figure out how to block that.

December 15, 2023

I received same call yesterday, Spencer used same senario.  I know Quickbooks does not call... but I did have a case (closed) from week before.  Tried to get me to purchase $3999.00 cost of repairing my files.  He said he was from Quickbooks.

SCAM!   THEY ARE GETTING SMARTER.

December 15, 2023

Talked to Capital One about original scam in March 22, 2023 told my story they are going to investigate meanwhile sending paperwork by mail to dispute the charge of 5414.  A surprise, I just want to reach as many I can.  Quickbooks Support never calls and they use Glance Guest to interact with computer not Data Solutions which they installed on my computer March 2023.

December 15, 2023

I read someone disputed then later had to repay it.  That's what likely will happen.

January 24, 2024

This just happened to me as well.  An Indian accent wanting my information.  The scary thing was it showed up as a QB Support incoming call.

June 6, 2024

I just received a call (not the first time) saying that they are from support and my subscription payment was declined.  I asked for a number to prove that they were with Quickbooks/Intuit.  He gave me the number [phone number removed].  When you call back, it does says Quickbooks support but sounds...like a weird recording.  I highly suspect this is a scam.  I can't find anywhere where to report this via the support area.

July 5, 2024

The call was to be returned to ( removed ) x623.  I called them back. They are 100% scammers pretending to be with Quickbooks/Intuit.  Do not give this fake company any information.  Avoid them at all costs.

August 8, 2024

I had a call from someone saying they were from Quickbooks and that they were trying to renew our subscription and the credit card on file was rejected and he wanted a new credit card.  He knew that we had 8 users and a lot of information including the 4 digits of the credit card that was on file which had been changed so it sounded legit.  I told him that I would update the credit card in our account and would not give it to him.  He then said I needed to call him back once done because it had to be renewed by this Friday August 9th.  I was on the road and had to wait to later in the day to go to QB and enter the new credit card.  When I went in to QB the credit card that was on file was the correct credit card.  I called QB and reported what had happened.  She looked at our account and said for some reason even though it was correct on our side it had not transferred to their side.  She fixed it but never asked for the credit card info and sent confirming emails.  My concern is if this was not a legit call for QB how could anyone have this much information about our account.  It seems like either QB has been compromised or someone with QB may be helping with information.  I would like a firm answer how this could happen.

August 8, 2024

@Water Tanks   If you search the community, you will find a LOT of people have had that happen.  There are a couple threads that point out that it is shady employees with QB that are stealing information, then handing it off to their "people" to scam us all out of as much money as possible.

Just know that QB will NEVER contact you for a credit card, under any circumstances. If the card on file doesn't work for any reason, they will just lock your account. You won't have access to it.

August 8, 2024

Just got one of these fraud calls as well. I knew all of our subscriptions were current as were the cards on file so no way I'm giving "Martha" a credit card number on the phone. My question is how do they know such detail of the accounts? Feels like our customer data is not very well protected which is scary.
