I recognize you prefer to use the classic view in QuickBooks Online, @userdavid12. I'll share some insights about disabling the modern view.

QuickBooks updates the view for a better and more convenient experience while using it. And currently, the option to disable it is unavailable.

We understand your need for the functionality and would love to hear your thoughts about your experience when switching to modern views by sending us feedback within your QuickBooks Online company. This enables our product developers to consider bringing back the old view.

Open the Gear menu and input your thoughts from there. Here's how:

  1. Click on the Feedback option.
  2. Type in your comments or product suggestions.
  3. Hit the Next button to submit feedback. Kindly refer to the screenshots below for guidance:

You can also review our QuickBooks Online Feature Requests website for any request updates.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to resolve any issues you may have. Please let us know if you have other concerns with reports, QuickBooks, or display preferences in QuickBooks. Stay safe!

That's disappointing. This is a clear example of an "improvement" that ends up making things worse. When I click on an item, say interest expense, in the P&L report by month to see the transaction report of the transactions making up the interest expense, QB used to show a nice compact listing of the transactions in the Classic view, perfect for my needs. Now it opens up a list of transactions for the entire year to date in a wide Modern expanded view that is hard to look at. Clicking on an item in say May should not bring up a list of transactions from the beginning of the year. Modern view definitely does not improve things for me and was an unwanted change.

Fortunately, there is still a "Switch to Classic View" button which gets me back to the view I want but it takes an extra step every time I click on an item to view the detail.

I'll give feedback as suggested but I'm not sure why a disable modern view was not built in originally.

I agree, please do away with modern view and make classic view the the default.

May 20, 2023

Every time I click on the gear to leave feedback the whole screen freezes (5 times over the past 3 days).

I have to close the QBO page in my browser.

I too would like to disable Modern View and stay in Classic View when I need to view the line item details.

If I wanted summaries, I would make a custom report.

As said below, if I click on May I don't want to see the whole year.

Definitely NOT an improvement.

(However I do appreciate now being able to remove unused boxes on the home page -- It's much cleaner.)

Hi there, @baabcorp201.Please know that we value your business and are committed to providing the best possible service.

We can resolve the feedback screen issue by performing some basic troubleshooting steps. Occasionally, too much cache buildup in a browser can cause unexpected behavior with the product. You can open your account in a private window to clean this up. Please utilize these keyboard shortcuts:

  • For Google Chrome browser: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • For Mozilla Firefox browser: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • For Safari browser: Command + Shift + N

If you can send a feedback, you can clear the browser's cache or switch to a different supported browser. It could be a short-term issue with QBO or the window you're using.

Additionally, there are numerous ways to customize your reports. You can filter them to display specific accounts or customers or format the layout so that the correct data appears in the appropriate place.

Keep me posted if you still have questions or concerns in QBO. I'll be here, ready to assist you. Keep safe!

For heaven's sake, AbegailS, READ this whole string!!  Numerous users have followed those directions, to clear the cache, and have reported back that it made NO DIFFERENCE in the performance.  The Modern View takes over and Classic View has to be reformatted in every detail every time we switch between screens.  Modern View is set up as the default for the program, which none of us wants.

May 25, 2023

Please give us the option to set Classic View as our default. Modern View is clunky (the opposite of modern really) and requires extra steps every time I use it. Also, asking users to submit feedback through a mechanism that is glitchy is not helpful.

August 17, 2023

The modern view is buggy.  Every time I use it it comes up blank.  This is after I try all date ranges.  Only when I click the "Switch to "Classic" view does my information appear.  Please remove this feature until it works properly.

Ive been complaining about modern view ( which I personally hate and I have over 40 years of experience in audit and acounts ) to quickbooks since it appeared. Everyone needs to do the same as that is the only way we will get it sorted.

Thanks for waiting, Donald. I recognize you prefer to use the classic view in QuickBooks Online. I'll share some insights about disabling the modern view. Someone needs to tell the scriptwriters to look up "more convenient" and tell us how that applies to a forced change to a less productive and more cumbersome process.
and the "Fortunately" we still gave you a button to click every single time to go back to the way the reports have been presented since inception is a condescending slap in the face.

I agree with others that this updated view is a royal pain.  I have yet to find one that I prefer over the Classic view, and I've had a bookkeeping business since about 2004.  There are some things that allow you to view in Classic View, but there are others that do not.  Seriously need to create the ability to switch back for all areas.

June 8, 2023

It looks like everyone missed that the "back" button in Modern View works.  Great work QBO!

An issue that I run in to is that when I try to drill into sub-accounts from the Income Statement or Balance Sheet and it takes me to modern view and doesn't show me any details.  I need to keep clicking on different rows depending on how many levels of sub accounts I have.  Extra steps are extra time.  It's not much, but the user experience has become worse.

Another way this creates extra steps is that when I download to Excel and all the amounts are in text format.  Bad form QBO.

Some features seem cool, but nothing let me know how to use them.

In the end, Modern View is simply one more step that it takes to get to Classic View.  Please offer Classic View as a default.
I already offered feedback through the feedback tool in my account.

I'm upset and my team is upset.  Poor roll out, QBO.

August 18, 2023

Modern View was clearly designed by developers and not accountants. There's no other way to describe how absolutely useless the thing is and how much time it wastes trying to use it.

My company is now looking at what our other options are since the Accounting Dept output has slowed down so much that it is now starting to effect Operations and it's all because of this useless awful interface and the extra time it is taking to make the excel exports actually usable.

This thing is a freaking disaster and the bad news is that it isn't going away. The options for those who hate it are to either suffer through with it or find a different software and suffer through the pain of an implementation.

September 14, 2023

Quick update to the situation. My employer is moving away from Intuit products as a whole and we are working on an implementation to be done by year end.

June 14, 2023

It is so disappointing that Intuit is ignoring yet another problem brought up by so many users.

Like everyone else on this thread, and I would presume to say on behalf of anyone who prefers useful functionality to ridiculous "enhancements" that don't work, PLEASE PROVIDE AN OPTION TO DEFAULT TO CLASSIC VIEW. Or as some have suggested, just eliminate Modern View since obviously no one likes it.

If any of you moderators have any respect for us users - your customers - please get this message through to the development team and make this happen. NOW.

I can't see the date column with the "improved" view nor do I have the option of staying in Classic view.

Enough with the talk about how much you "hear" us.

We pay enough. Fix this, please!!

Thank you for reaching out to us, Jim3333.

Changing the view to classis is not an option anymore, so let's check to see if the missing date column is caused by random browser issues.

To start, you'll want to sign in to QuickBooks using a private browser. This mode disables extensions and prevents the cache from saving your browsing history.

  • Safari: Command + Shift + N
  • Microsoft Edge: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Chrome: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl + Shift + P

If browsing privately lets you see the Date column, you can return to your regular browser and clear its cache. Alternatively, you can try signing in to QuickBooks using a different browser to determine if this issue is specific to one browser.

You can also click the Small Gear icon on the report page and make sure that the Date checkbox is ticked.

Let me know if you need more help with your reports. Take care and have a good one!

This Modern View reporting is a huge step backward.

June 27, 2023

One of the most frustrating things for me is that if i get to the Modern View, then decide t go back to the report, I can't. The option is to go to the Report List. Then I need to create the report all over again!

June 19, 2023

I agree the modern view is not efficient.  Every time I have to click to revert back (which is a lot) it is wasted time and very frustrating.  I would prefer the classic view.

June 24, 2023

When I try to edit a transaction from the modern view I just get the following error. Classic view works fine though. Please add option to make Classic View default.

Thank you for adding a screenshot, colinexl,

I'm here to help fix the error you encounter.

To start with, let's edit the transaction on an incognito window to isolate cache issues. You can use these keyboard shortcuts to open one:

  • Google Chrome: Ctrl Shift N
  • Microsoft Edge & Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl Shift P
  • Safari: Control Option P

If it rectifies the issue, go back to your main portal and clear its cache to remove the browser's history. You may also try accessing your account using another supported browser.

I've also added these references as your guide in modifying transactions:

Additionally, I see the convenience of making Classic view a default one. With that, I'd encourage you to send feedback to our developers. You can do so by clicking the Gear icon and then selecting Feedback. For now, you'll have to click the option manually.

I'm always a post-away if you have other concerns in managing your QuickBooks account.

June 24, 2023

I hate "modern view" and always have to click on classic view to get the reports that I need.  Having a way to default to classic view would be awesome!
