Making Tax Digital (MTD) Drop-in Session | Post Your Question!

Since April 2019, Making Tax Digital (MTD) rules have only applied to businesses with a VAT taxable turnover above the £85,000 threshold. But the government plans to roll out this digital transformation across the entire tax system.

This may now change the way your business operates, so we want to make sure you're fully informed of the changes. You can find our MTD FAQ page here for more.

If you still have a question, please feel free to post below and an expert will answer you.

Hello,

Any help appreciated. I am trying to submit a VAT return. Have been MTD registered for a long time now, had no previous issues submitting through Quickbooks. Go to submit to HMRC and get the error message below and the page just returns to my "prepare return" screen. I'm not trying to change anything in the return, simply submit it using the standard method that has worked before.

I have cleared the cache on two different laptops and both show the same message, I have checked my connection to HMRC and no issues there either. Thank you.

Thank you for joining the thread, @JDR81.

We can check the Close the books section and see if there's a date entered. If so, we can remove it and turn off this function. You should then be able to submit the VAT without receiving an error message.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Gear icon.
  2. Under Your Company, select Account and settings.
  3. Click the Advanced tab.
  4. Select the Accounting edit pencil icon.
  5. Check if there's a date entered in the Closing date and remove it.
  6. Turn off the Close the books feature.
  7. Hit Save and then Done.

Once done, you can now submit your VAT returns. Then, record your tax payments in QuickBooks to keep your information up-to-date.

Whether you want to know more about MTD or have a burning question about the new changes and how they affect your business, this guide has everything you need to know.

I'll keep an eye out for your reply, so feel free to leave a comment below if you have more questions about filing your taxes. Have a good one.

Thankyou, that still hasnt worked, there wasnt a date in the close books section.

I have been on to HMRC and they have said go on Government Gateway, put in VAT Number etc but it says unable to verify account.  I seem to be going round in circles, they cant see a problem, and everything quickbooks are saying doesnt work either.

Hi,

I have the following error code:

Filing date should be a valid date and lie between end date and today's date (code: "INDIRECTTAX-19702")

The start date is 1/8/22 end date 31/10/22 and I can't submit today 10/11/22

What am I doing so wrong?

Hi 100seanby,

Let's fix this error by modifying the start date. I'm here to guide you.

Let's modify the start date to 31/10/22 and then enter today's date as the end date. From there, file the taxes again.

In desperation I opened up my old computer and all went through perfectly, submission receipt received.  How and why was this possible?

January 7, 2023

I've just logged in to look at my return and its come up with a Take Action error "We can’t connect to HMRC right now" yet the Making Tax Digital Enabled logo is showing in the top left corner. When you go to the Take Action button it just says about signing up but I'm already signed up and have submitted returns for the last 3 years without any issues. All the help topics are related to people just setting up MTD.

Anyone know how to fix this as I'm baffled, thanks in advance.

I cannot connect to HMRC to submit a VAT return, done all the authorisation sequence multiple times, 'we cannot connect to HMRC right now.' is all I get. Tried disconnecting authorisation and re connecting with no success.

When I try to edit VAT settings to correct the - 'effective date for new scheme' and save the correct date, it defaults back to 31/10/20. Could this be the issue?

Hello CTints, Thanks for posting in the Community. In answer to your question, yes it could impact things. Is this your first return in Quickbooks? Does the period you are filing start with the 2020 date? If not could you check on the  HMRC gateway what dates HMRC is expecting and does Quickbooks match those dates?

has anyone received this error message when attempting to link quickbooks to HMRC

"Message":"You do not have the proper permission to access that feature.","dojoLocale":"en-gb","state":"Error"

Thanks for bringing this to our attention, @paul272727.

I'm here to lay down possible reasons why you're getting this kind of error while connecting QuickBooks Online to HMRC.

You might want to double-check the following causes while trying to connect with HRMC:

  • You have not registered for MTD.
  •  You've registered for MTD but have no access to HMRC.
  • In QuickBooks, you must re-authenticate MTD.
  • You entered the wrong credentials for the Government Gateway.
  • Make sure you're using the correct VAT number.
  • An accountant set up the MTD connection.
  • A client established the MTD connection (for accountants)
  • You have no outstanding HMRC commitments.

Next, try some of these suggestions to get your QuickBooks back to normal if you encounter the Take action status when attempting to connect to Making Tax Digital (MTD) for VAT. Check out this page to aid the potential error: Take action status in connecting to HMRC for MTD.

Furthermore, this article will demonstrate how to configure QuickBooks Online Making Tax Digital (MTD) for VAT. It is a new method for companies to manage their taxes and electronically submit their VAT legal returns to HMRC. See this as your reference: Set up MTD for VAT in QuickBooks Online and connect to HMRC.

Hi,

I have been filing my VAT returns manually for some time instead of Quickbooks sending them direct, now with MTD I can no longer do that.

My Quickbooks says I am MTD enabled but I have a VAT return not filed from 31/03/2021 (this return was filed manually on my HMRC vat account) that I am unable to get past with the message "can not connect to HMRC"

I need to submit my last VAT return, I can see this return through my reports but not able to send.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks you.

January 30, 2023

Hi Nigel, please check that the VAT due amount and the start and end period dates match those which were submitted to HMRC and then temporarily disable MTD in QuickBooks. To do this, click Edit VAT from the VAT dashboard > Edit settings > Toggle off the switch for MTD > Confirm on the pop-up (this won't impact any settings with HMRC). After this, click on Prepare return > Mark as filed. You can then switch MTD back on and the open return will reflect your next period due. 🙂

A have a problem when trying to authorise Quickbooks to connect with HMRC. I get the following message;

{"Message":"You do not have the proper permission to access that feature.","dojoLocale":"en-gb","state":"Error"}

I then tried to disconnect from MTD in settings getting this message;

Something's not quite right. You can try again now or give it another shot later.

Not sure what to do now..
MTD was previously set up on my account.

February 8, 2023

Hi Sophia9, thanks for joining this thread - this message is usually caused by the user permissions in QuickBooks. For example, you may have previously had access to set up MTD as a company admin, but have since been changed to a standard user. As MTD is restricted to primary and company admin users, please double-check your user role before re-authorising. 🙂

I am an accountant using QB accountant for my clients accounts. I have to become VAT registered now myself. I use the 'my practice' feature for my accounts but do I use my Agent Services Account credentials to submit my own VAT returns?

Thanks in advance

Hi all - hoping someone can help as I'm hitting several brick walls! I was registered for VAT under a different VAT number a few years ago - and MTD worked fine. I then didn't need to be VAT registered so closed that scheme. From Jan 2023 I am VAT registered again with a different VAT number. I've updated that VAT number in Quickbooks and have pointed it to the new Gov Gateway log in which holds that VAT info. I "filed" any VAT submissions which suddenly looked to be open and closed my books - so the only open period is Jan - Mar 2023 (so, fine). OK so when I go to authorise using all the new info, it either sticks on the authorise page on Quickbooks (ie doesn't progress, doesn't do anything at all), or it fails. I can't see the reason why - if I go to HMRC I can see that Quickbooks is authorised so seems fine at that end. Any ideas welcome! Thanks
